Anej Černe

Seeking refined spiritual depth in a distinctly contemporary voice.

Biography

Anej Černe (b. 1994) is a Slovenian composer who studied composition and music theory at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana under Prof. Dušan Bavdek, and furthered his craft through masterclasses with Klaus Ager, Gary Carpenter, Gyula Fekete, Ulrich Kreppein, Márton Illés, Uroš Rojko, Vito Žuraj, and others. He holds a master's degree in music-theoretical pedagogy from the same institution. In 2018, he received the Prešeren Prize of the Academy of Music for outstanding compositional achievements.

Černe places special emphasis on contemporary sacred music, which he regards as a realm of profound freedom and spiritual breadth. His compositional language is rooted in Gregorian chant and theological texts, while exploring the sonic richness of various languages and the creative potential of Latin. He integrates a solid theological foundation with a distinctly contemporary sound and compelling aesthetic conviction — creating works of refined spiritual depth, technical precision, and sensitivity to both ancient tradition and modern expressive possibilities.

Alongside his compositional work, he is employed as a music teacher and serves as organist at the parish of Primskovo na Dolenjskem, occasionally also at the Tridentine Mass at Stična Abbey. He actively composes for children and youth ensembles. His works have been performed by the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, Slovenian Philharmonic Choir, String Chamber Orchestra of the Slovenian Philharmonic, Polski Chór Kameralny, Ensemble Dissonance, ČarniCe, and others. He is a two-time prizewinner at the Musica Sacra Nova International Competition (2nd Prize 2026, 3rd Prize 2023) and a finalist at the Ó/Modernt Composition Competition (2021).
